Badgeless: Goodbye Beauty Bar for Good

6 Mar

As Austinites, we’ve come to the understanding that our downtown music scene is just in the middle of a facelift. Things are being moved up and down and naturally some things are going away all together. As Southern Crux, we’re saddened to see some of the music venues that have helped make this city the live music capitol of the world closing their doors. From the closing of our beloved Emos right there on the corner of 6th and Red River, to the closing of another hipster hangout, the infamous Beauty Bar chain hangout off of 7th street. However, Beauty Bar did open the Beauty Ballroom off East Riverside.

Here is the news for the final Beauty Bar show, a closeout to Southby 2012 and goodbye to an Austin local music venue, and we’re sure won’t be the last of many more changes to our cityscape to come.

March 18th @ 6pm at 617. E 7th Street. You can RSVP to the event, which is sponsored by Sailor Jerry, so at least you can get drunk during your goodbyes.

With bands like Glasslux, Japanther, Herra Terra, Bad Rabbits, and Krisp we’re confident that you’ll have a great time saying bye bye, so make sure you head on over to RSVP so you can be a part of the festivities, and help closeout another great year at SXSW!

SXSW + VEVO + SPAGHETTI WAREHOUSE

5 Mar

VEVO’s making their way back to Austin for SXSW, and has released this video clip leaving us all guessing who they could possibly be bringing to SXSW this year.

Take a look for yourself and watch the video VEVO released two days ago:

As some of you may or may not have known, last year VEVO came to Austin bringing Kanye and his posse to perform a super exclusive secret show at the Austin Power Plant. While a lot of the efforts that went in to making sure the event brought a crowd and an audience succeeded, a lot of fans were turned away due to the confusion of the mass texts that were going out, and by the time Kanye made a delayed appearance to the stage, it was already into the wee hours of the morning.

Despite the setbacks of last year VEVO is pressing on and is at it again this year, taking on a smaller scale venue, but still one held near and dear to Austin’s heart. Spaghetti Warehouse is to host the VEVO SXSW showcase party, however the details of who the three performances are going to be is remaining a secret until VEVO makes an announcement via their twitter due sometime within the next week. VEVO is encouraging fans and followers to stay tuned to their Twitter to see who the secret performances are, and to hopefully get a shot at the RSVP to the exclusive party.

While that is all fun and games, we’re really anticipating who the performers are going to be and were wondering who you guys think VEVO is going to bring, or who you would hope to see VEVO bring!

Maybe Southern Crux well see you there!

SXSW From Day to Night: TIPS!

2 Mar

If you’re going to SXSW, you should be aware that it is a non-stop mash of things to do upon things to do. You need to be prepared to make choices as well as have a general idea of whats going to go on during your time at SXSW. Whether you have a badge and are planning on going to panels during the day and parties at night, or you’re heading downtown badgeless to party it up non stop, you’re going to need to keep in mind some essentials for surviving SXSW from day to night.

Remember, Southern Crux has done this, both Patricia and Shayda have been going to SXSW for years and have made the mistakes so you don’t have to! Now we’re going to share some of our little secrets with you guys!

  1.  For those of you who will be driving down to Austin and/or will have your vehicle, you might want to load the trunk of your car with snacks and water bottles. We can’t stress how important it is going to be to stay hydrated or grab a snack to take with you when you’re waiting in those lines under that sun. Especially when you’re expected to be up most days by 8 or 9 am and are having a late night, we’re talking 3 or 4 am. Not only are you losing sleep, but you’re keeping your body up, standing, AND WALKING around downtown for at least 5 days in a row, you will need to be hydrated or your body will give out.
  2.  Keep packets of Tylenol, Emergen-C, and even Pepto Bismal somewhere on hand, (Carry a fanny pack)! Going back to tip number 1, your body is under a lot of stress and lots of alcohol and to avoid the week after SXSW hangover being extremely brutal, it’s important to take caution before it gets worse. We don’t want you missing out on anything during SXSW, so keep your immune system in check, be prepared with medication!
  3.  Spare clothes!! Again, if you’re an Austinite and will be driving your car to the festival, you should definitely think about packing extra clothes, or shoes in your car so should you have to make a wardrobe swap, you’re car is a handy on-the-go dressing room! Whether you spilled something on your shirt before the night parties begin, or you’re feet are just killing you cause you wore some fancy shoes to those day panels, you’re going to be so happy when you remember you put some spare clothes in your car!
  4.  EXTRA phone battery, or a portable charger. Remember you’re here to have fun, but if you’re coming to this festival to network too, the worst thing that could happen to you is your phone dying. You can’t tweet, you can’t upload pictures of that rockstar you ran into on the corner of 6th and Neches, you can’t call your friends to meet up with them, the unfortunate possibilities are endless, so be ready. There will be some places where you can plug your phone in, like the lobby of the Hilton Hotel at 5th and Red River, however so will hundreds of other people. Don’t rely on finding an outlet to plug your phone in, just prepare now by getting that extra battery, or portable charger! Don’t be the one with the dead phone!
  5.  Have a place where you and your friends can meet up, yes it’s a little ridiculous like you’re 8 years old in a theme park, but it’s good to keep your group together even when they aren’t together. Whether it’s a bar, or a party, or a street corner, get familiar with your surroundings, especially if you’re not familiar with downtown Austin. There will be a LOT of people down in Austin for SXSW, we can vouch that is has been getting more and more populated with crowds each year. As well as venues and parties are expanding to East of 35, so the playground that is SXSW is growing so it’s best to just be cautious to at least know somewhere you can meet people IF you get separated, or IF your phone does happen to die. We don’t want you partying solo!

Remember you should be following us on twitter too, that way you can see what parties we’re at and what we’re up to, cause we promise Southern Crux is going to be where the magic is happening!

NEW DANCE MUSIC by Bearstronaut

1 Mar

Bearstronaut creates dance music, music that soothes you and music that moves you. By way of Boston, these guys met in 2007 and have been creating music ever since. Nominated at this past year’s CMJ Festival as, “CMJ’s top bands to see”, it’s no surprise this quartet has been seen playing amongst bands like Passion Pit, and Dragonette.

We came across their music and couldn’t stop listening, the beats, the hidden undertones of electronics kept us entangled. I almost got the feeling I was listening to Friendly Fires if they had added a little r&b mixed with psychedelics.

Nontheless, we are so thrilled to share with you that we will be interviewing them at SXSW this year! This band has a really cool story of how they’re getting to Austin too! They will be helping make a documentary which you can check out here, about the road from Boston to Austin, and back! We were blown away and can’t wait to see all the fun that happens before getting to SXSW.

Catch the guys on Twitter, Facebook, and head on over to their Bandcamp where you can listen and download their new album for (NAME YOUR PRICE $$$).

If you’re in Austin for SXSW, catch them:

Badgeless: Multi Day Parties!

29 Feb

It’s not just about the great bands you will see at SXSW, the free beer is too a top priority, and there is a plethora of opportunities for you to get some free beer while supporting some great shows, who knows, you MIGHT even see a band worth remembering!!!

SXSW also is home to the IFC Crossroads house, you know the TV channel that hosts Portlandia (we still think it should have been Austonia!) will be in Austin during Interactive/ Film and Music. And there will be beer and bands and comedy to feed all your senses. Some bands to check out while you’re there are : Reptar, Citizen Cope, and Youth Lagoon. The house is open, and you don’t need to RSVP, obviously it’s first come first serve, so if there IS a band you want to see you better show up early! Oh, we almost forgot to mention, you’ve heard of the Freecreditscore.com band, oh yeah, they’ll be at the IFC Crossroads house playing too!

Another opportunity for beer during the Interactive portion of SXSW, but does need an RSVP, is the Cooking Channel Beer Garden @ Easy Tiger. There will be free food and beer, and they say there will be live music, so you can’t go wrong with this one. Plus, it’s sponsored by the Cooking Channel, they have some great recipes on there! This event will be 21+, but your RSVP, gets you access all three nights (March 9th, 10th, and 11th)

This final party we’re sharing for this post is gonna be a Facebook RSVP, called the Core Power Day Parties at Skinny’s Ballroom. From Thursday March 15- Friday March 16th. There will be free beer, swag, food, and doors are at 11:30am both days. This one is sponsored by Balcony TV and Tx State University Radio- KTSW, so you know it’s gonna be good.

STAY TUNED! @Southerncruxpr

Badgeless: Overwhelmed? More SXSW tips!

28 Feb

With all the people making their way down to Austin, it’s no surprise that you have probably encountered a few bumps in the road already. No places to stay? Too many RSVP’s to keep track of? Want to know what else to do while you’re in Austin? Southern Crux has the answers!

First of all, if you’re traveling to Austin and you’re still looking for a place to stay, chances are the hotels are booked up. But since you’re coming to Austin, you might as well attempt at a unique Austin experience by maybe using sites like, Couch Surfers, or Crash In Austin that put you up in people’s homes. There are different options, but again, another option for those who have yet to make a reservation and are planning on staying in Austin/ close to the fun!

Our fix to the RSVP dilemma is to make a spreadsheet with all the juicy details you would need to make an inclined decision to head or not head to a specific venue. You can never RSVP enough, so even though it seems overwhelming, sometimes you might run into a situation where a party you thought you were going to attend might be at capacity, or worse, ALL THE FREE BEER IS GONE 😦 Use spreadsheets to organize, and categorize by venue, date, time, bands playing, who is hosting the party, and maybe whether or not there will be free things there (i.e. food, swag and beer). By making a spreadsheet you can print it or save a copy to your smart phone so you have easy access to it. Also by using sites like Evernote (we LOVE Evernote, it keeps our office and schedules organized!!) will allow you to make a copy of the file on your computer and synch it directly to your smart phone or tablet. Another tip for the RSVP spreadsheet is to alphabetize by venue/party name. The worst thing is to have a schedule and not be able to find anything you’re looking for.

We also realize that while you are visiting Austin, you might be interested in doing some non-SXSW things and take a break from the crowd by checking out some of our recommendations for some must-do’s while you’re in Austin.

1. Zilker Park– If you can make it up to Barton Springs Road, you will experience one of Austin’s greatest parks and hangouts. It’s home to Austin City Limits festival in the fall, but it’s also a great place to go to get away from the hustle and bustle of SXSW. Play a game of frisbee or take a lunch break on the grass, you can’t go wrong, and don’t wanna miss this Austin treasure.

2. Franklin Barbecue– You MUST go eat at this local gem, but there’s a caveat, once they are sold out for the day, they aren’t making any more food! The service begins at 11am, so you should plan on arriving at least a half hour early to make sure you get to try this place out. But it is some to die for Barbecue if you’re heading to Austin, you would want to check it out!

3. Gourdough’s Specialty Doughnuts– Are just like their slogan says, Big, and fat, and oh so delicious. They have been featured on Anthony Bourdain’s No Reservations, GQ Magazine and the Austin Chronicle and feature donuts with names as eclectic to the city that they come from. Austin is home to many food trailers and Gourdoughs is no exception, from donuts with bacon to strawberries there is something for everyone. This is a southern crux must-do, so when you check these places out, tell them Southern Crux sent you!

We hope this comes in handy when you’re in Austin, and we’re glad to share it with you!

PUREVOLUME HOUSE!!!

28 Feb

We know how long you all have been waiting for this, and we have been too!!! But it is with great pleasure that we announce the PUREVOLUME HOUSE RSVP’s are OPEN FOR BUSINESS!

This event is 21+ so make sure you RSVP and take your ID with you when you go pickup your pass. However there is an exception of an all ages day show on Friday March, 16th. The line is known to get really long and tends to move slowly, so we suggest the earlier in the week you can go get your wristband, the better.

The full schedule can be found here with bands like Motion City Soundtrack and Hellogoodbye!
Purevolume never fails to produce a solid lineup of bands, and always introduces us to someone we just fall in love with.

We hope to see you in Austin @ The Purevolume House!
