Austinites Unite @ Beauty Bar

26 Feb

Southern Crux made it out to Beauty Bar Saturday night to say their farewells to a beloved Austin hangout and to catch Zeale bring the house down. The temperature outside was dropping, but that didn’t stop Austinites from coming out to support some of their favorite bands.

Opening up for Zeale were local bands Sphynx and The Shears, while Prom Date made the trek from Louisiana to be there to support the other artists and hopefully make an impact on Austin. And what a dance party Beauty Bar was, everyone was packed in there but no one cared cause everyone was having a great time. When Prom Date opened to a half-packed beauty bar, the night was already being set by people dancing and getting their drink specials on. By the time locals Sphynx took the stage, you could tell the crowd was digging their 80’s retro vibe and the trio was rocking out with blow up saxophones and matching 80’s skinny jeans. Another local band The Shears were playing in honor of their album release, being slightly newer to the Austin music scene, this group of musicians is quickly becoming a group to pay attention to. With a feisty lead singer, The Shears did an excellent job at jazzing the crowd up for Zeale, while most definitely scoring some new fans along the way.

When Zeale took the stage, he opened with some classic favorites with DJ Rockwell 9000 spinning the beats. After the crowd was amped up, he introduced his new drummer and new backup vocalist and that’s when the party really took off, everyone performing on stage was in synch with each other, and you could tell that the crowd was pleased with the new additions. People were moving, the sound was electric, it was a feeling that we hope everyone get’s to experience at least once in their lives (So make sure to catch Zeale at SXSW!). His words are smooth, there’s passion in the lyrics, you can tell that Zeales songs come with stories and heart, and we think that’s why he is so well received by his peers and his fans. He doesn’t just go up there and try to be somebody he’s not, every element of his show is authentic, from the freshness of his clothing, to the words burning through the speakers, and it just makes you want to keep dancing and listening. We caught up with Zeale before his set and got to ask him some questions we know you’re all dying to hear the answers to, so keep checking back as we are working hard on getting that footage to you all!

If you didn’t make it out to Beauty Bar you can catch Zeale as well as The Shears, and Sphynx @ SXSW, which happens to be only a few weeks away! We can hardly wait! But if you were at the show last night, we want to know what you thought of everyones performances! Who was YOUR favorite?

5 tips to a happy SXSW

23 Feb

I don’t know if you guys are familiar with Do512, but you should go ahead and check that site out for your daily fix of what’s hot and happening in Austin, besides that it’s full of SXSW goodies that we here at Southern Crux fully endorse.

Make sure you make an account so you can RSVP to all the parties.

To help you along your way, here are 5 personal tips from yours truly, we’ve learned the hard way, so this is years of trial and error culminating to perfection the AUSTIN WAY to get around SXSW.

  1. DON’T THINK YOU CAN OUTSMART ANYONE, these people (out-of-towners as we like to call them) have done their homework, they might seem like they have no idea where to go, but they do, so always show up earlier than you would think to an event.
  2. BADGES ARE A WASTE OF MONEY, unless you’re that die hard fan of that overly popular band in which case the only time they ARE playing at SXSW is at a BADGE ONLY SHOW, then you can go ahead and buy a badge. But for the rest of us, most bands play badge and badge less showcases, you just gotta do your homework.
  3. MAKE FRIENDS! You never know what band or “movie star” you could be standing next to. 6th street becomes this giant conglomorate of people waiting, drinking, mingling, passing out flyers.. those are the people you wanna talk to, get the word on the street of what’s hot and what could potentially be a waste of your time.
  4. EAST AUSTIN IS SAFE! Over the years we have seen more and more venues pop up across the way, and more and more of the festivities are expanding to the east side, be smart, take a pedcab (carry some ca$h to tip these nice men and women!) cause the walk can be brutal and anywhere at night could be a little on the side of danger.
  5.  JUST BECAUSE YOU RSVP’D doesn’t mean you will get in, you have two options to this, A) make a master list of all the places you’ve rsvp’d to, so if something doesn’t seem promising, you’ll know  JUST what your options are. or B) WING IT, you’re at a festival that has no barricades, (aside from being generally available to only those 21+) but if you’re of legal drinking age, this is your playground, go into that random bar to check out that random band, you never know who you might run into.

I hope those tips came in handy, they certainly came from our hearts. And I mean it, you guys are lucky, you have us, and this will be Shayda’s 6th year at SXSW and Patricia’s 7th. We know this city, and are ready to bring you the most exclusive experience, so stay tuned right here.

If you like us, or like what we’re doing, do us a favor and share us with your friends. We’re a small start up trying to make our mark in this wonderful city of Austin, Texas and we need as much support as possible 🙂 We love you guys and appreciate all the positive feedbacks. Feel free to leave comments below! And don’t hesitate to like us… right over ….  > there! (On the right hand side bar!)

Ghost Beach

21 Feb

It is with great pleasure that we get to share this band with you! Ghost Beach is a kitchy pop, rock, mess of indie hotness. Having gotten the opportunity to meet and see front man Josh Ocean perform with his former band TV/TV at SXSW a few years ago, a lot has happened to the band since our last encounter. A few band mate changes, a definite name change, and some more electronic bolts here and there, but nothing short of pure amazingness! We will be bringing you an exclusive interview with the band during SXSW, so listen below, follow them on Twitter and Facebook! And let them know Southern Crux Shayda sent you!

Did I mention they are releasing all their new singles for FREE! Who doesn’t love GOOD FREE MUSIC, cause we sure do!

Check out a personal favorite, Bones
